Intent

In the Music Department, we intend to foster the following skills in each student by developing an active interest in Music.

Students will learn and develop the ability to:

Demonstrate self-confidence when sharing for an audience, be it ideas, presentation or evaluation.
Improvise on the spot.
Work with given material, be it a script, score or brief.
Work constructively, collaboratively and co-operatively within a small group.
Work independently and manage their own time and resources.
Work successfully on a solo, small group or whole class task from start to finish.
Meet deadlines.
Develop and improve technical, creative, communicative and expressive skills.
Develop the qualities of resilience, resourcefulness, reflection and reciprocity.
Develop active listening and constructive critical skills as an audience member.
Use technical and technological equipment in a presentation.
Work across discrete disciplines to create and perform a piece of Music.
Understand all roles within the Music. industry through research and guidance.
Understand the steps and procedures of presenting a performance; from initial planning to final presentation.
Evaluate the work of themselves and others through formative and summative assessment.
Be exposed to a wide variety of the work of professionals within Music.
Develop their skills further to a higher level through after school activities.

Implementation

In the Music. Department, we implement the following to build and develop skills in each student by developing an active interest in Music.

In class, we will help students will learn and develop their skills:

Through warm up games, giving roles according to their interests and strengths.
By giving examples and models before students embark on improvisation.
By giving guidance and practice of reading scripts, texts, scores and notation.
By changing personnel within groups for each task, having individual roles and responsibilities within the group, making it clear at the planning stage what each person needs to do.
Through flexible tasks, round-the-circle activities as well as longer tasks to develop personal skills. Give homework tasks which allow for personal development.
By giving opportunities within tasks and projects in each topic for solo, group and whole class work.
By giving clear guidance and instructions on how long students have to work on a piece, and the importance of time management; be it 20 minutes or 3 lessons.
By introducing the use of technical and technological equipment, ensuring clear understanding of how it can be used effectively, with reference to Health and Safety awareness.
Through a variety of tasks, learning the skills of voice production and projection, using instruments, props, technical and technological equipment, including video and sound recording, communicating with the audience, and learning expressive skills when presenting.
Through watching and listening to the performances of others, learn the skills of being a respectful and engaged audience member.
By working across all disciplines to devise and present a piece of Music, developing skills in all areas and focusing on strengths and interests.
Through role play, tasks and research, learning and understanding all roles within the professional Music industry, on and back stage, admin, promotion, etc.
By presenting a long term project from initial planning to final evaluation.
By managing rehearsals, organising preparations.
Using formative and summative assessment, including 2 stars and a wish throughout the process, learning subject specific vocabulary and constructive criticism language to review, improve and enhance.
By taking all opportunities offered to give students a wide experience of professional artists; from workshops delivers by outside agencies to attending live performances at professional venues.
Through encouraging them to take their skills further by joining after school activities.

Impact

The Music Department aims to help students develop as confident musicians, across and in collaboration with the discrete disciplines, who can:

Work successfully alone, within a small group and as a whole class.
Improvise or work from a script or score.
Share ideas and work collaboratively in a small group.
Demonstrate technical, creative and expressive skills and qualities
Work both with direction and independently.
Meet deadlines for tasks and projects.
Develop and improve their personal performance skills.
Understand and put into practice the use of technical and technological equipment effectively.
Demonstrate an understanding of all roles in the Music industry.
See a project through from initial planning to final evaluation.
Evaluate critically and positively using subject specific language and vocabulary.
Have a broad and varied experience of the work of professional artists.
Further develop their knowledge and skills outside the classroom by taking part in after school activities, working towards school performances, services, events and shows, and also within their local community and beyond.
