EAL Department

Notre Dame is a community of languages and cultures.

At Notre Dame RC School we have many members of staff and students who speak more than one language and who come from a variety of backgrounds.

In our school, students with English as an Additional Language (EAL) play a full part in our school community by supporting one another and are encouraged to flourish by being given the opportunity to work as Translators/Interpreters during events such as Open days and Parents’ evenings. Every month, as a whole school, we celebrate a different ‘Language of the month’ and embed the vocabulary into the curriculum.

English as an Additional Language - Our Support

At our school, when EAL students arrive they go through an ‘Induction Programme’. This induction allows them to get to know the school, meet other students and staff, learn about the school routine and the rules, and it helps them to start settling.

Beginner EAL students immediately start getting in-class support and they may be withdrawn from some lessons to get extra English support, which helps them to learn/develop English language skills and acquire essential language to help them get settled more easily.

EAL students are invited to attend the EAL club after school, where they get extra help with their homework and learn extra English.

We support our EAL students academically, but we also coach them in order to help them with the transition. This way, they feel supported at different levels and this allows them to flourish and achieve their potential.
